Anoka County prosecutors have charged a Coon Rapids woman with domestic assault by strangulation after her 73-year-old mother told police she was nearly suffocated inside their shared home.
According to the criminal complaint, Fay Elizabeth Scott, 49, was arrested on October 6, 2025, after Coon Rapids police and paramedics responded to a 911 call reporting an unconscious woman at a residence on 107th Avenue NW.
Emergency Response
Officers arriving on scene found the victim unresponsive on the floor. Scott was performing CPR. She initially told police she found her mother slumped over in a chair and had pulled her to the ground to resuscitate her.
Paramedics placed the victim in an ambulance, where she regained consciousness. She immediately told Officer Platz, “she tried to kill me, she tried to kill me,” and described how her daughter allegedly pressed on her chest and placed something over her face.
Witness Account
A witness, who also lives in the home, reported he had overheard an argument between Scott and the victim. Moments later, he emerged from his bedroom to find the victim unresponsive with Scott standing over her. He called 911. The witness also told police that Scott’s mental health had been deteriorating and that she had recently been hearing voices.
Hospital Interview
Detective Neumann later interviewed the victim at the hospital. She recalled sitting in her rocking chair when Scott allegedly covered her face with what may have been a housecoat. She said she could not breathe, heard Scott tell her “don’t fight it, just go with it,” and believed her daughter was trying to make her stop breathing. Detectives documented facial bruising consistent with eyeglasses being pressed into her face.
Charge and Legal Proceedings
Scott has been formally charged with domestic assault by strangulation, a felony carrying up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Court filings show prosecutors intend to use evidence obtained through search and seizure, as well as statements made by the defendant, during trial.
The state has also filed a request for disclosure, requiring Scott’s defense to provide notice of any evidence or witnesses they plan to use.
Judge Jennifer Stanfield signed an order of detention on October 8, 2025, holding Scott in custody pending further proceedings.
Records also show she was later granted conditional release under court supervision, with restrictions that include no contact orders.
A review hearing is scheduled for December 18, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Suzanne Brown in Anoka County District Court.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This report is based solely on documents filed in Anoka County District Court in October 2025.
