Coon Rapids Woman Charged After Late-Night Crash; Police Say She Was Under the Influence of Marijuana

A Minneapolis woman is facing multiple charges after a late-night crash in Coon Rapids that left two men injured and revealed she was driving under the influence of marijuana, according to a criminal complaint filed in Anoka County District Court.

Deanna Marie Chew, 30, has been charged with criminal vehicular operation causing bodily harm while under the influence, a gross misdemeanor, along with driving after suspension and operating an uninsured vehicle, both misdemeanors.

According to the complaint, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Northdale Boulevard Northwest and Xeon Street Northwest around 11:39 p.m. on October 15, 2025, where they found two disabled vehicles blocking the westbound lanes. One car, with two men inside, faced west, while Chew’s vehicle faced east with significant damage.

Both male occupants reported pain—one with back injuries and a wounded knuckle, the other complaining of chest pain. Chew requested an ambulance. Officers said she showed signs of impairment, including watery eyes and the odor of alcohol, but denied drinking. A preliminary breath test indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.037.

When asked again, Chew admitted she had smoked marijuana a few hours earlier. Officers conducted a limited field sobriety test due to her involvement in the crash. A judge later authorized a search warrant for a blood draw, which was completed, though results are still pending.

Investigators also learned Chew’s driver’s license had been suspended since July 24, 2025, and that she did not have insurance coverage for the vehicle.

Chew was arrested and remains in custody under an order of detention signed by Judge Karin McCarthy on October 16, 2025. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and a fine of $3,000 for the top count, in addition to possible penalties for the other offenses.

The case was investigated by the Coon Rapids Police Department and reviewed by the Anoka County Attorney’s Office.
